BUTARITARI, October 14, 2026 (BPA NEWS)  — Butaritari Island has successfully hosted the 12th Annual General Meeting of the Central Pacific Shipping Commission (CPSC), strengthening regional partnerships aimed at improving shipping services across the Pacific.

In his closing remarks, Kiribati transport minister and Butaritari MP Alexander Teabo praised participating countries for their discussions on shared interests, saying the meeting had helped build lasting partnerships and new friendships towards safer, more reliable, practical and mutually beneficial shipping services.

He acknowledged that some may have doubted a small outer island’s ability like Butaritari to host a regional meeting of this scale, but said its successful completion demonstrated what could be achieved through cooperation and community support.

He also thanked Butaritari’s Mayor, Tekinati Chairman, Father Tawaia Natibu, church congregations and the wider community for their preparations, coordination and warm hospitality.

The meeting brought CPSC representatives together over several days to discuss issues of common interest and strengthen cooperation in regional shipping.
