YEREVAN, ARMENIA | TUNGARU PRESS | October 26, 2026

Kiribati has secured an important leadership role in international biodiversity negotiations after being nominated to represent the Asia-Pacific regional group on the Bureau of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The appointment places the Pacific island nation in a position to help represent the interests of approximately 50 Asia-Pacific countries in discussions concerning biodiversity conservation and global environmental policies.

Kiribati received the nomination during the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), currently taking place in Yerevan, Armenia, from October 19 to 30, 2026.

The nomination is supported by fellow Pacific island countries, reflecting regional cooperation in international environmental negotiations.

Kiribati Gains Voice in Global Environmental Leadership

The CBD COP Bureau serves as a steering committee responsible for helping guide the administration, organisation and political direction of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Its responsibilities extend beyond the official conference sessions, allowing members to contribute to discussions and preparations between major international meetings.

The Bureau consists of 10 representatives, with two selected from each of the United Nations' five regional groups.

Working alongside the COP President and the Convention's Secretariat, Bureau members help oversee conference proceedings and support the organisation's broader work.

Kiribati's new position provides an opportunity for the country to help ensure that Asia-Pacific priorities are considered in international biodiversity discussions.

Environment Director Welcomes New Responsibility

Nenenteiti Teariki-Ruatu, Director of the Environment and Conservation Division within Kiribati's Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agricultural Development, welcomed the nomination.

She described the appointment as an important responsibility for Kiribati and the wider region.

Teariki-Ruatu expressed hope that Kiribati's participation would help bring greater attention to the concerns of Asia-Pacific countries.

She also emphasised that the position would require close cooperation with Pacific neighbours.

Although Kiribati will formally occupy the Bureau seat, she said the responsibility would be shared through teamwork and regional consultation.

The director thanked Pacific countries for their confidence in Kiribati's ability to represent their collective interests.

Stronger Pacific Representation in Biodiversity Decisions

Kiribati's appointment comes at a time when Pacific island countries continue to advocate for stronger international action to protect natural ecosystems.

For Kiribati, biodiversity conservation is closely connected to the health of marine ecosystems, fisheries and the natural resources that support island communities.

The country's participation in the CBD Bureau creates an opportunity to highlight these priorities within a broader Asia-Pacific framework.

It also strengthens the visibility of small island developing states in international environmental governance.

Through cooperation with other Pacific nations, Kiribati can help communicate regional concerns and contribute to discussions that influence future biodiversity policies.

Global Biodiversity Conference Continues in Armenia

CBD COP17 brings together countries participating in the Convention on Biological Diversity to discuss international cooperation on protecting nature and conserving biological resources.

The conference is scheduled to continue until October 30.

During the gathering, governments and regional representatives are working through issues related to biodiversity conservation and the implementation of international commitments.

Kiribati's nomination to the Bureau represents a significant development for the country's international environmental engagement.

A Shared Responsibility for the Pacific

While Kiribati will hold the formal position, its representatives have made clear that the role will involve collaboration with other Pacific island countries.

The appointment offers an opportunity for Pacific nations to work together in presenting their priorities to the wider Asia-Pacific group.

It also demonstrates the capacity of smaller countries to contribute to the leadership and administration of major international agreements.

For Kiribati, the nomination marks an important step in strengthening its voice in global environmental decision-making while helping ensure that Pacific biodiversity concerns receive international attention.
